Hagrid was the first magical person Harry met, someone who introduced him to a whole new world and shower up Dursleys. He's liked a lot for it and readers often went along Harry's favorable bias for Hagrid.
As a character, Hagrid is usually well meaning. He's kind, loyal, and naive to fault. His major flaws are his childish attitude, he can't keep secrets, his liking for magical creatures doesn't translate well for others and often endangered other.
I think he's alright because he was never malicious whenever he bought his creatures. I mostly see him as an immature manchild. Not the best man, but likeable most of the time.
