Poll: Favorite Elective Class at Hogwarts

If you had to pick a favorite subject (to study/teach), which would you choose?
Arithmancy
Care of Magical Creatures
Divination
Muggle Studies
Study of Ancient Runes

Lemme just weigh my options:

  • Arithmancy: basically math, but magical. I like math, so that's fine.
  • Care of Magical Creatures: I'd almost like this class if not for the variety of horrifying creatures in this world.
  • Divination: I don't have the patience for this.
  • Muggle Studies: might be an easy O.
  • Study of Ancient Runes: would probably be really interesting, and I really like studying foreign writing systems.

I'm stuck between Arithmancy and Ancient Runes, but... I'll probably have to go with Arithmancy to stay safe. I'm not the best when it comes to studying foreign languages (despite my interest)

Again, rating from most to least favorite.

  1. Care of Magical Creatures. I know some of them can be scary, but I'm also a native Floridian. Snakes, spiders, alligators, etc. don't phase me (love them, actually)… I'm sure I could handle some Blast-Ended Skrewts.
  2. Muggle Studies. I'd rather teach than study this subject, mostly because there's so much prejudice/ignorance. It would be nice to be able to counter that, especially when teaching purebloods.
  3. Divination. I think Trelawney makes the subject much more obnoxious than it actually is. Might be fun to learn from a more competent teacher.
  4. Study of Ancient Runes. Meh.
  5. Arithmancy. Math was always my worst subject. Not sure the magical version would be any better.

This is easy for me:

  1. Study of Ancient Runes: I am a linguist, so this is my go-to option. In my life, I have studied a little of languages not using the Latin alphabet, and I seem to have a good pictographic memory (might not be a real term, but I can picture foreign words fairly well).
  2. Arithmancy: I'm no mathematician, but I do like logic, patterns, order, and so on. So this would come second.
  3. Muggle Studies: It would be boring, but...
  4. Care of Magical Creatures: Eeek. I have never cared for a creature in my life.
  5. Divination: Total bullshit. I have no imagination at all when it comes to the spiritual or the supernatural.

For me Ancient Runes because a good amount of ancient magic was rooted in the runes. Examples include Celtic and Germanic runes which are associated with old legends and mythologies.

I go with Arithmancy because it involves math which is one of my favourite subjects. Mathematics is rightfully called the language of science because all the calculations, experimentation and phenomenons can be exhibited by it and for me, magic is a science unknown so arithmancy holds similar significance for magic and foundation for spell creation and much unknown potential.

Yes, @naaga. I imagine that Potions must include a great deal of Arithmancy, especially since Snape called it an "exact science".
