Interesting. I have read a few longer self-insert fictions. It always takes a while to get used to the format, which is why I usually avoid them, unless they are well recomended...

I like them because it's fun to fantasize about yourself doing things you'd never get to do in real life and if it's depicting someone else in my place then it just like breaks the illusion and i get annoyed lol. also you get to give your imagination a break bc someone else is doing it for you.
oh and I also think that's what separates fan fiction to regular fiction for me bc normal books are almost never self insert and I like to enjoy fiction and then imagine myself in the story later yk
