Rereading/Rewatching the Harry Potter Series

Please roast it. It deserves it.

Yeah, Ron would be easier to corrupt, way easier than Cedric.

Did I mention Bellatrix is Voldemort's baby mamma?

Yeah, I knew about Bellatrix. I mean, I can buy it from her end, but his? I just can't see him as a sexual being, especially post-resurrection.

I don't know, I could see him as the type to Slytherin to her Chamber of Secrets.

I'm not proud of that, but fuck it.

While the cursed child had potential to be good, it was full of ridiculous plot holes and assumptions that were not funny. I did like some of the plot points like Albus Severus being a Slytherin, best friends with Scorpius Malfoy and their shenanigans together, parts with alternative Severus Snape, the jobs of the golden trio, a good adult Draco Malfoy and concept of time travel. Ultimately, it was in my opinion a poorly written fanfiction canonized by JKR and suffered from being a play not a JKR penned book yet legitimised by her words. I won't state the bad things in the cursed child because the list is ridiculously long and some of them have already been mentioned by @thegestaltprince.

I'm both surprised and impressed that anybody here bothered with The Cursed Child. Never seen it and won't read it. This whole thing annoys me because it is so unnecessary and it uproots my established view of the books-- hence why I won't read/watch it. Details about some of the plot, while carefully compiled by GestaltPrince, made me time out before even finishing the synopsis. (No offence to GP; the plot is extremely convoluted.) The whole thing just seems to suffer from too many 'What Ifs' and decision-making that is thoroughly implausible, such as Voldemort having sexual relations with Bellatrix Lestrange and, I now find, Harry Potter apparently wishing he never had his son. My rule of thumb is that I have zero interest in anything that isn't in the seven Harry Potter books. I have not even read Fantastic Beasts, nor have I watched the movies.

The first seven books are a complete series. The rules had already been established, opinions fully formed, and any lingering expectations were put to rest. That's what happens when you finish a project, be it an individual book or series. Once it's completed, it belongs to the fans, who by that point have made it their own.

That's why later HP related projects have essentially flopped. It's why there have been so many mixed, often negative reactions when JKR goes into "retcon mode". Fleshing out additional details is one thing (e.g. Cokeworth), but when a creator tries to add info that contradicts canon as we've come to understand it, it just feels wrong. Making Cedric a Death Eater is a great example… it goes against everything we know (and many of us love) about that character.

Of course, ranfiction writers do this too, but that's different. We're not the source of canonical information, which gives us the freedom to explore alternative interpretations/scenarios without affecting the original series.

The Cursed Child is an abomination which is a badly written fanfiction for me at this point.. I refuse to consider it canon, no matter what JKR says.

This is an old thread, but I picked up on a plot point regarding the locket in the seventh book/movie. If it negatively affects people who wear it, why couldn't Hermione have stashed it away in her magic bag?

It's because Harry and others paid a high price to get the locket.

  • Dumbledore got weakened in the cave after losing blood and drinking potion which allowed Snape to kill him ( his reasoning before knowing Snape's truth).
  • Regulus Black died trying to retrieve the Horcrux.
  • They had to infiltrate ministry and ended up losing a home in Grimmauld Place.

It would have been logical to stash it in the bag but Harry in his paranoia thought it better to keep an eye on the locket. Another reason is they only had a single horcrux for their efforts and Harry wanted it in front of their eyes to assure them he wasn't leading others on a goose chase.

Another theory is locket horcrux influencing them to wear it.
