The 1970s is also the time where schools in the US started teaching the dangers of smoking. I remember getting a coloring book and crying to my grandparents to stop smoking. My grandfather smoked Camel and my grandmother smoked Kool. I remember ashtrays were a common thing in houses.  People smoked in hospitals, restaurants and basically everywhere. When I started high school there was a smoking section. When I started University the Student Union was filled with smokers and the non-smoking section was a small area. Obviously a lot has changed since the 1970s, but Severus and Lily were teenagers then and smoking is what a lot of them did.
