Always: The Severus/Lily Thread
Quote from ZombiePotter04 on July 22, 2024, 7:03 pmQuote from Robaku90 on July 22, 2024, 10:45 amQuote from ZombiePotter04 on May 7, 2024, 7:59 pmI always liked to headcanon Lily loving Sev too when they were younger. Maybe that's just because I have a heart of glass and want our dear Sev to at least have had something good in his life after he started attending Hogwarts (Lily's requited love), even if he didn't know it. I like to think they just were too afraid to confess their feelings to each other in time, considering the Hogwarts-related environment they were in (if they had both gone to another school or had both been sorted into Ravenclaw or Ravenclaw/Hufflepuff their romance could've flourished way easier. I think their main struggles came from both being sorted into rival houses and the toxic environment surrounding it (that is why I really like a certain fic where Lily is in Severus' place as a Potions' Master/Mistress (Severus died due to the werewolf attack "prank" in third year), where at the end of the Second Wizarding War, instead of dying by Voldemort/Nagini's hand (fangs), she burns Hogwarts to the ground and dies in the wreckage. She does this due to the toxic house rivalry that caused her to not believe Severus' statements about the Marauders' before he ultimately dies at their hands. I cannot remember the story's name right now, but will look it up in case anyone wants to read it).
Also, to be honest, I dislike Lily's canon portrayal (in her teenage years at least) quite a bit. I just ship her and Sev together because I cannot fathom Severus being with anyone else than her, considering his life has basically revolved around her since they met, even after her death (when I write it this way, it does sound a bit obsessive, but I do not believe that was the case, because someone who is obsessed with someone else will not respect their wishes for distance/relationship with someone else. The fact that Severus left her alone after their fight and after her marriage to James, speaks to me as not obsessive, but as love, considering her happiness was more important to him than his own needs and desires). And, aside from Sev's memories, we do not know a lot about Lily, so, we as readers can shape her personality for ourselves quite a bit.
To get back to my previous point, the reason I dislike Lily's canon portrayal is mostly because of her deciding to date and marry James and to ditch her best friend after the tree incident (cmon he was being bullied and you "smiled" at James' antics even though your "bestie" was suffering horribly. Like, how dare you). Maybe I am biased, considering my attraction is quite different from the usual standard. I have always found Severus to be quite attractive even though he was obviously portrayed not to be. And, for some reason, I do not find men that look like James (the "modern guy" look) attractive at all (this also applies to my real life attraction to men (yes, Severus was my real life awakening to what I find attractive in men oop-)). But, above all, personality matters the most to me, and I do not vibe with James', like at all. And, I don't know how Lily could.
And, even if she did like James' personality (apparently she did, according to canon, at least eventually), I cannot fathom being in love with someone who is torturing your best friend of like 7 years for no good reason (even though you shouldn't bully, even if you have a "reason") and who does not care if he lives or dies due to it. Attracted? Sure. You cannot help attraction to a certain extend (but, considering my own attraction standards, I do not vibe lmao), but actively falling in-love with someone like James? That takes effort/actually liking someone as a person. And the fact that Lily went there with James, to actually fall in love with him, even though she knows what he is like and has done to her best friend, makes canon Lily not that likable in my opinion.
Sure, Sev has his flaws and made his mistakes, but James has way more flaws in my opinion. Underneath it all, Severus is a good person, and I thought Lily was capable of seeing that, considering they were friends for so long. I do not believe James is truly evil or anything, I think underneath it all he does have some goodness in his heart, but considering he had no issues torturing someone/people with the reasoning of "he shouldn't exist" just because they were sorted into Slytherin, shows a big issue regarding morality to me. I think this makes him in some aspects as bad as the people he claims to hate so much (the Death Eaters and the Slytherin Death Eater wannabees), considering they have obvious morality issues as well, seeing their ideology and their acts of terror regarding a "race" (Muggleborns and Muggles). It seems to me that James is kind of the same in that aspect, but instead of it being with a "race", like with the Death Eaters, for him it is a Hogwarts house and all the people within it (Slytherin house).
Anyway, these are my thoughts on Lily, Sev and James and Lily and Sev's relationship. Considering these parts are the parts of the Harry Potter franchise I disagree with the most, I like to rewrite them in my own head. This is why I love fics where Sev and Lily stand as one united front against James. They soothe my broken heart. </3
Anyway, let me know what you think of my thoughts and rambles I wrote here. :p I can understand why some people would disagree with me and that is perfectly fine, of course! In the end, everyone has their own interpretation and wishes of a story and sometimes how they would possibly rewrite it if they could. These are just my thoughts.
Also, if you read this post until the end, kudos to you! You're amazing! <3
@zombiepotter04 I agree! Valid and accurate analysis. Sometimes I wonder if Lily wasn't happy with what happened and found a reason to end her relationship with Sev. She could have entered into a relationship with James, this popular and handsome boy. And James is still an asshole.Heyyy, thanks for replying to my post!! Nice to know someone agrees with my point of view, but to be honest, I am not too surprised you are that someone! 😀 I do think the translator murked up your answer a bit, though. :p As I do not completely understand what you mean. The English translation you gave us states: "Sometimes I wonder if Lily wasn't happy with what happened and found a reason to end her relationship with Sev. She could have entered into a relationship with James, this popular and handsome boy. And James is still an asshole. 🤣" (ChatGPT says that this translates to: „Czasami zastanawiam się, czy Lily nie była zadowolona z tego, co się stało, i znalazła powód, by zakończyć swój związek z Sevem. Mogła zacząć związek z Jamesem, tym popularnym i przystojnym chłopakiem. A James nadal jest dupkiem. 🤣”) I am not entirely sure by what you mean with Lily being unhappy with what happened and thus finding a reason to end her relationship with Sev? Do you mean the fifth year "tree" incident? What do you wonder about then? Sorry if I am not making sense myself, haha. It is 1 am here oops-👀 Again, thank you for replying and appreciating my analysis! Kudos! <3

We have a similar way of thinking. 😄 Give me a high five! Ha, ha, that's the charm of translators. 😃 Sorry. I'm in a hurry to explain. What I meant was that maybe Lily didn't want to be friends with Sev anymore (those constant fights they had towards the end of their friendship, she didn't want to understand him, why he was fascinated with dark magic etc. are proof of that in my opinion), he introduced her to the world of magic and she no longer needed it. She was fed up with him and the situation at the lake was an excuse to end the friendship, which must have suited Lily. She could give poor, despised Sev a break and start dating the rich and popular James. She quickly consoled herself, you have to admit. I resent her for this. She wasn't such a great friend. Maybe she wanted to fix it later, since Sev was supposed to be the godfather of her second child (if I were him, I wouldn't agree to such an insult), but she didn't have time because Voldi took care of her. 😆 That's how I see it.

I do think the translator murked up your answer a bit, though. :p As I do not completely understand what you mean. The English translation you gave us states: "Sometimes I wonder if Lily wasn't happy with what happened and found a reason to end her relationship with Sev. She could have entered into a relationship with James, this popular and handsome boy. And James is still an asshole.
" (ChatGPT says that this translates to: „Czasami zastanawiam się, czy Lily nie była zadowolona z tego, co się stało, i znalazła powód, by zakończyć swój związek z Sevem. Mogła zacząć związek z Jamesem, tym popularnym i przystojnym chłopakiem. A James nadal jest dupkiem.
”) I am not entirely sure by what you mean with Lily being unhappy with what happened and thus finding a reason to end her relationship with Sev? Do you mean the fifth year "tree" incident? What do you wonder about then? Sorry if I am not making sense myself, haha. It is 1 am here oops-
Again, thank you for replying and appreciating my analysis! Kudos! <3
@zombiepotter04
We have a similar way of thinking.Give me a high five! Ha, ha, that's the charm of translators.
Sorry.
That's how I see it.
Ahh, I get what you mean now! And, viewing it that way does make sense, which is why I kind of despise canon Lily (and why I love to headcanon it being otherwise, haha :p )
The thing about Sev becoming the godfather of her second child does indeed sound familiar to me, but I cannot for the life of me remember from where? I don't think it was actually stated in the book that that was her plan, right (I may be wrong)? Did Rowling say it? Did she confirm a fan theory? I don't know. I'd be curious to know where that information stems from, as it does ring a bell with me.🤔 If it is actually true, though, then I'd be kind of offended on Sev's behalf, because Lily, dear, you abandoned him and then decided to marry his enemy. Like, a truly nice person wouldn't do that to the person they said they considered their best friend once upon a time. And then be like, sorry Sev, I know I kind of shoved you in the dirt when we were young, so wanna be my second child's (who your torturer that still hates you is the father of) godfather (I'd be really curious to know how Lily would manage to convince James of this, hahaha).
Anyway, despise canon Lily and love fanon Lily for the win!😤❤

Quote from ZombiePotter04 on April 1, 2025, 4:12 pmHeya! Reviving this thread, cuz I accidentally made a whole new thread in the Creative Endeavors: Graphics, Artwork, Videos section of the site regarding Snily only art, which I forgot you can already find here (ironic, considering the last post in here was from yours truly💀)! Woops!😂 Anyway, I copied over my original post from over there, so it hopefully can still do its purpose in the revival of us sharing Snily art!❤
[Original Post starts here]
Hi everyone!
I was looking through here and saw we didn't have an "official" Snily-only art thread! As a Snily-only shipper myself, I was quite in need of one (even though I saw some beautiful art from other ships when looking through here!), so here it is!
This one will be non-NSFW only, as that requires an explicit thread marker according to the rules, but maybe there should be a Snily-only one for that type of artwork too!
Anyway, from now on, this can be the place to show off your fav Snily art, be it made by yourself, or seen on sites like Tumblr and so on (don't forget to credit)!
I'll start with posting a Snily art that has had me in a chokehold for a while now, so much so that I've edited it into a desktop version for my pc's background!
This wonderful art by souryam on tumblr - show them some love on their tumblr post of this amazing artwork!❤
She also posted a zoomed-in version:
As I said before, I made a desktop version (resolution 3840x2160, usually 27" inch monitors) for personal pc background use. I can post it here, but I haven't asked permission from the author to share my desktop version yet (didn't initially plan on sharing it with anyone). Do you all think I should (if there is interest in me sharing it so that you can use it too)? Or do you think I can just share it here no problem (don't really know the "rules" on this haha)?
(If there is interest in me sharing the pc background version on here, I could also make other versions to fit other types of monitors, like the standard 1920x1080, that most people have)
Anyway, here is how that version looks on my desktop:

I have lots more Snily art that I found to share with y'all, but this is already a pretty long post, so let's keep this one till here.
Can't wait to see what y'all have made/found regarding Snily art! C'mon, don't be shy! Share it with the class! 😀

- What did they talk about when not discussing magic or Snape's family environment?
- Where did they hang out in Cokeworth outside of Hogwarts term time
- Did Lily ever suspect that Snape's feelings were deeper than friendship?
I would've loved to get these answers about their friendship. We only have fanfics to fill in the information right now. On one hand, I would love a marauders' era prequel and on other hand considering her track record with works after HP, I would rather headcanon the information over getting flawed works like Cursed Child and Fantastic Beasts series.
The way I feel about this is that the answers to these questions are our headcanon. Most of us fans have come up with most of our own answers and just want to share them. Well that is how I feel. I don't want to argue or find "the truth". Anything that gets published, gets accepted into "canon" will only disappoint most of us. Nothing will be able to beat our own imagination.
Sharing my own ideas to the questions.
- I think they did a lot of muggle things, as music, movies, neighbors, Petunia's love life.
- All over town in good weather. Jumping from roof top to roof top. Go to each other's homes. I do think they spent more time at Spinner's End because they could do magic there and sometimes Petunia and Lily need a break from each.
- I think she was hoping they were. I think it was a Ron and Hermione thing going on.

Quote from IFFIN on July 15, 2026, 9:51 pmQuote from Heatherlly on March 16, 2023, 12:10 pm“Why are you so obsessed with them anyway? Why do you care what they’re doing at night?”
“I’m just trying to show you they’re not as wonderful as everyone seems to think they are.”
The intensity of his gaze made her blush.
To me, this suggests that Lily knows or at least senses something deeper. Not only that, but her reaction is quite telling. To me, this suggests an attraction or at least the seeds of one on both sides. Blushing indicates vulnerability/self-consciousness, which are key factors in romantic attraction (especially for teenage girls).
I've seen it suggested that Lily was blushing because of James, not Severus. Supposedly, she was afraid Severus had picked up on her crush on James and felt self-conscious about it. But that theory ignores context/Lily's subsequent reactions.
“I didn’t mean — I just don’t want to see you made a fool of — He fancies you, James Potter fancies you!” The words seemed wrenched from him against his will. “And he’s not . . . everyone thinks . . . big Quidditch hero —” Snape’s bitterness and dislike were rendering him incoherent, and Lily’s eyebrows were traveling farther and farther up her forehead.
“I know James Potter’s an arrogant toerag,” she said, cutting across Snape. “I don’t need you to tell me that. But Mulciber’s and Avery’s idea of humor is just evil. Evil, Sev. I don’t understand how you can be friends with them.”
In the first quote, Lily blushes, even though Severus is only talking about James in a more generalized sense. Then in the second quote, Severus bluntly states that James has a crush on Lily, but she doesn't even react to that. Her reaction (raising her eyebrows) is based on Severus's behavior, not anything to do with James.
Blushing at the mere mention of James, only to have zero reaction to the idea of him having a crush on her? That makes no sense. Maybe others read it differently, but what I see in this scene are undercurrents of an attraction between her and Severus, which (sadly) never had a chance to turn into anything more.
Finally (from a web chat in 2007):
Jaclyn: Did lily ever have feelings back for snape
J.K. Rowling: Yes. She might even have grown to love him romantically (she certainly loved him as a friend) if he had not loved Dark Magic so much, and been drawn to such loathesome people and acts.
You could interpret this as Lily only loving Severus as a friend, but that "yes" is very telling. "Have feelings for" is a distinctly romantic term, not one I've ever heard pertaining to friends or other platonic relationships. This entire quote (and canon itself) suggests that there was an attraction at some point, one that had the potential to become much more if things had gone differently.
I agree with a lot of this.
Some other things that make me think it was both is that Snape as an adult is a legilimens. I have heard that it came naturally and other times that he had to work on it. Either way at this time he would have some ability and I do believe he was reading Lily's mind to see what she really thought. And it wasn't James. In my opinion. Also how James friends told Harry that Snape was a special case. I think James saw Snape as competition. I personally have a hard time thinking James would pick on Snape if he was some misfit boy hanging around with Lily and I think if he was he would try and befriend Snape not attack him. If Snape was, such a misfit, he would welcome James fake friendship.
There is also how no one in the book who knew Lily told Harry that she knew Snape. I understand why it was such a secret to the readers, but since we are digging deeper than what I think was intended to. Why don't any of Harry's teachers tell him that Severus and Lily were friends, especially Hagrid we know how he can't keep secrets very well.

For James, JKR did say that on interview that she didn't hate him and I covered that part in the 'dysfunctional friendship' meta where she insinuated something bigger. I also read the exchange between her and James as some sort of Passive-Aggressive flirting during the SWM. Her comment that Messing up your hair because you think it looks cool to look like you’ve just got off your broomstick, showing off with that stupid Snitch, suggests that she indeed noticed him, these also put weight in her fancying James theory. Personally I believe that she indeed fancied him, she didn't date him due to being friends with Snape and James' attitude which she hated. So after she broke her frendship with Snape and James supposedly stopped his bullying and defalted his head, she gave into her feelings and started dated him without any burden of caring for Snape's hate for James. This one is much better than doing 180 on her previous stance on James who she supposedly hated.
You are free to discuss where you don't agree with me, here. I won't mind. 😸
I also think so. I think that was part of what made this one of Snape's worse memories ( I have a hard time thinking it is his worst memory, but that is another topic). It was bad enough that James and company were picking on him, but he survived it before. But then here comes Lily to save him. This is around 1976 and that is a big no no for a girl to save a boy. At this time most boys would rather be beaten up than have a girl save them. I recently re-watched Buffy, and there was an episode where Buffy saves Xander from being beaten up by jocks and she told him "No need to thank me." He told her something to the effect that he wasn't thanking her and she shouldn't have done that. I am not saying who is right or wrong, but what I am trying to get to is that Severus would be a guy from his time. And I pretty sure his macho dad Tobias would have told him a few things. So Lily comes to the rescue and starts with pointing out James defects as others have said "The lady doth protest too much, methinks," .
I might come back tomorrow and see what I wrote. It might be a bundle of nothing. But I am roll and have to start getting ready for bed soon and I want to give my two cents to other comments. 😂

I always had multiple crushes going on at the same time… I never really settled on one unless/until I actually started dating that person.
Same here.

With Severus’ luck, saying that James fancies her may have been the very reason Lily became aware of James in a romantic sense.
I think so. I can understand Lily liking the attention. I think many of us at that age are pleasantly surprised when a popular guy like them. Yes it is superficial, but some of us grow up.
