I also liked them after the Prisoners of Azkaban and I was happy that Harry had some connection to his father. I was expecting great things from James.

Great point. If JKR had put this in the book then we could say they changed. But since Sirius is confessing that Snape was a special case for James, I basically told he didn't change and was lying to Lily.
