I'm going to try answering, because it sounds like you are asking in earnest, and if I were in high school, I would want an answer to this, too.
I think it's like with all "Slytherin" traits. Ambition is not bad in itself. What makes Slughorn loathsome are his motivations, which are rooted in selfishness, laziness, greed, gluttony, and self-indulgence.
This is why McGonagall sort of has to give him a kick in the pants at the start of the Battle of Hogwarts.

And thats why I never interested to think like harry in all of 7 books.even as zi read the book I never decided is this person is good or bad if he loves harry potter or loathes harry potter. we cannt be as pure as angel. We are flawed human being. We are did. But because of that,we can strive to be better human

greed and gluttony? It think the view of slughorn like that is too simplistic and too much either you are bad or you are good. Weasley twins are bullies yet I never seeing them as bad as james and sirius. And slughorn is not person driven by greed.
I knew few people acting like much more like bootlickers more that slughorn was.trust me,whatever you see about slughorn,real life people that you described are much more despised. Slughorn never bothered to make relationship with malfoy and nott,when voldemort is clearly winning,shown he never hunggry for power. People of greeed and gluttony will be actinv very badly *extort people,Threatining with private information* and slughorn is not like that. You can refused join slug club and Slughorn will respect ypur decision. He cared much about sittting in background,profiting from connectuins he made with powerful people like dirk creswell. But greedines and gluttony? Well its not slughorn. But I admit he is not fair professor

I do find movie Slughorn delightful, in an old-fashioned British comedy sort of way : )
