HP Weekly Discussion: Favoritism
Quote from The Gestalt Prince on August 7, 2023, 4:02 pmQuote from Dark Angel on August 7, 2023, 3:48 pmThe whole marrying off all high school sweethearts thing is actually quite silly and counterproductive. It just makes you feel like you'll die all alone if you haven't found your soulmate and gotten married right out of high school.
I think Snape felt that one right there.

Quote from Naaga on August 7, 2023, 4:04 pmI think Harry/Ginny had more chance of a divorce than Ron/Hermione, Ronmione actually had development whereas Harry/Ginny came suddenly (at least Harry part).
Ultimately JKR wanted a big happy Weasley family ending, hence the ending.
JKR not writing about divorce again, because Harry Potter were primarily children/early teenage group targeting in character and involved more of detective work and adventurism rather than adult and mature themes. JKR also said she had to edit out a lot of adult content on insistence of her publishers. She wanted to end with feel good and optimism hence the epilogue which is quite unpopular in the fandom currently. Her naming Harry's two kids James and Lily was also because of that feel good factor for readers while Albus Severus was supposed to be the real lesson for Harry and involved character development on part of Harry, forgiveness towards Dumbledore and Snape and honouring them.
I think if JKR happened to write a HP sequel taking place after Battle of Hogwarts today for adult audience, we'd definitely see the concepts of relationships, divorces, etc. Her recent works involve these themes.

That's why I pick fics to give my boy the ending he deserved. 😸

I shouldn't have said that 😭

Listing top 5 students, not in a particular order.
- Merlin: The greatest wizard to ever live plus a Slytherin. Left quite an impact on the Wizarding World.
- Albus Dumbledore: Greatest wizard of the current era, a genius, possessor of Elder wand and responsible for defeating two Dark Lords.
- Tom Riddle: A genius in his own rights, went on to become the most terrifying current Dark wizard called Lord Voldemort. His deeds were great, terrible but great.
- Newt Scamander: Protagonist of fantastic beasts series, a world renowned Magizoologist, grandfather-in-law to Luna Lovegood and writer of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.
- Garrick Ollivender: The most renowned current wand maker. Refined the wand making process, standardised great magic cores and seller of all the wands wielded by UK Harry Potter characters.

Quote from Dark Angel on August 18, 2023, 12:12 pmI honestly have trouble answering this question, because to me being a great student does not necessarily guarantee success and being successful does not necessarily mean one was a good student.
In real life, we also have examples of college dropouts who went on to become insanely successful (Gates, Jobs, Zuckerberg...).
So, I agree with some of @naaga 's entries but not all because for some of them we never got a glimpse into their Hogwarts years and Newt dropped out, didn't he?
I would say:
Hermione Granger: she was the best student during Harry's Hogwarts years and that's quite impressive for a muggleborn who was dropped into the magical world all of a sudden at age 11. Also, there mus a reason why she's called brightest witch of her age?
Tom Riddle: Evil incarnate or not, the kid managed to become a prefect, enter the Slug Club and wrap the teachers around his finger and only Dumbledore was able to see through his facade. All of this as a half-blood orphan, he must have impressed everyone with his skill and knowledge since he had no family name and connections to depend on. I'm sure his grades were impeccable.
Minerva McGonagall: She just seems like the studious sort and wasn't she supposed to be a hat stall between Ravenclaw and Gryffindor? Furthermore, she must have had good grades to be able to work for the ministry, then return to Hogwarts for a teacher position and even become deputy headmistress.
Damocles Belby: we never got to meet this fella, but given that he managed to find a cure for lycanthropy, he's got to have brains. And since potions is the magical equivalent of chemistry, it must be one of the more difficult fields of study and thus need better grades.
Eileen Prince...I sincerely am running out of options so I'll cheat my way around your instruction not to include Snape. So, kid went to Hogwarts knowing more dark spells than the seventh years? His dad is a muggle so he can't have been responsible for that and knowledge doesn't just drop from the sky, so the only other option would be Eileen. Snape's diction is insane for someone growing up on the bad side of town and poor. There's a chance he taught himself better manners and speech after entering the wizarding world, I would like to think that he's gotten it from Eileen and that she pushed him to be a well-read young man, from thstbi infer that she must have been a good student herself

Quote from TimeLadyJamie on September 14, 2023, 1:15 pmThis is a hard one to answer for me, because despite Voldemort winning, I'd still be a person to hold out hope and fight till the end. And I think some others would be that way too. So, I could see it going both ways really. Some may have given into his rule, while others put on the act, but hide the rebellion underneath.
Obviously he can be defeated, they would just have to figure out how.

I imagine it depends on whether or not other countries are affected. If not, it will probably be regarded as a civil war.
But knowing Voldemort, I don't think he'd be content with only having the UK under his thumb. He already has allies from a couple of places in Europe, why stop there?
Voldemort is also described as the most powerful Dark Wizard of all time and he doesn't seem the type to have any reservations, so it's not like the rest of the world can disregard him as harmless.
I think other communities would've intervened when it became apparent they were also threatened.
