Misconceptions about Snape

Your fans are delusional.

Severus Snape is the hero of the wizarding world - you're not. Cold hard facts.

Quote from IFFIN on June 25, 2026, 11:26 amQuote from Heatherlly on February 25, 2023, 1:07 pmI'm thinking of writing a meta for our blog, focused on some of the most common misconceptions about Snape. Here are a few that come to mind:
- Snape was inherently violent
- Snape tortured and/or killed lots of people
- Snape was deeply racist/the magical version of a white supremacist
- Lily friendzoned Snape
- Snape was a stalker/had an unhealthy obsession with Lily
- Snape's parents are dead
- Snape hated children
- Snape hated everyone
- Snape was nasty to everyone
- Snape didn't care about anything or anyone except Lily
- Snape was unhygienic (small one, but it bugs me)
Can you think of any others you might add to the list?
I agree with your list.
- Snape was inherently violent- An example that some people like to use is the branch falling on Petunia. He was a child and not in control of his emotions or his magic.
- Snape tortured and/or killed lots of people- What I remember we were never told how the Death Eaters were organized. I think they were more organized like the ministry than The Order. I think Snape did more spying, delivering messages and healing the wondered. All this is shown in the books. I'm not saying he was never in a battle, but I do think he knew more about the dark arts than his fellow death eaters.
- Snape was deeply racist/the magical version of a white supremacist- My first reading I just accepted this, but then looking deeper there is so much more going on than "I hate muggles". I will stop here to much to dig into.
- Lily friendzoned Snape &
- Snape was a stalker/had an unhealthy obsession with Lily-
- A pet peeve of mine is when other fans want you to accept this and to stop shipping snily. Just because you hate a ship doesn't mean others have to stop. Anyway, there is so much we don't know about what went on with them. I believe there had to be more than what Snape showed Harry in his memories. I think readers are allowed to fill in the missing parts with their imagination.
- Snape's parents are dead- In the books we were never told what happened to them. I personally think of them as living. I also imagine how Tobias and Elieen met in the 50's. It is one of those fanfictions I have partly written in my head.
- Snape hated children- This is what many children think of some of their teachers. As grownups we should know better.
- Snape hated everyone- I just have a big eye roll for this one.
- Snape was nasty to everyone- I thought he was pretty civil to Narcissa and others.
- Snape didn't care about anything or anyone except Lily- Again we didn't know everything about him. Maybe he told his parents to go into hiding and they are living in Palm Springs loving retirement. I always felt that his biggest motivation for watching over Harry was the guilt he felt for telling Voldemort about the prophecy, which led to Lily's death.
- Snape was unhygienic (small one, but it bugs me)- This also bugs me. I never read that Harry didn't like Snape close to him because he had a bad BO or that he had a bad breath. We are told he has oily black hair and yellow teeth. Black hair tends to look oilier, because of how the light reflects on it. Also the longer it is the greaser it looks. I had long black hair when I was young and it looked oily even though I washed it everyday. As I got older I learned that the more you wash your hair or face the greaser it will be because the body is trying to replace the oils that have been removed. As for the yellow teeth Snape grew up in the 70s where teenagers smoked and smoked. I image Lily and him as smokers. Also tea stains the teeth. Just look at movies from the 60s and 70s and notice their teeth. Yellow.

Quote from IFFIN on June 25, 2026, 11:56 amQuote from Krystal on February 25, 2023, 1:21 pmOne thing that comes to my mind is the perception of Snaters that Snape was a bully as a teenager during his Hogwarts years where he bullied muggleborn students and Lupin.
Another is that he was a bad teacher. While his teaching methods were questionable, he was able to produce results. His class was noticed to be advanced according to the Umbridge, he was able to produce 10 Os from Harry's class of about 26-28 students. Huge point in Snape's favour is Hermione struggling in the potions in Slughorn's classes but she obtained top marks in Snape's classes. Even Harry felt confident that he could get higher grades in Snape's classes if he applied himself.
I have never heard of Snaters, but I have heard of Snape Apologist.
Snape was a bully as a teenager during his Hogwarts years where he bullied muggleborn students and Lupin.- I'm guessing that this comes from him laughing at what a Slytherin did to Mary and him being nosy about Lupin. There was a lot of bullying going around on all sides. We were never told what the curse was that was used on Mary, so I don't know how dark it was or it was just Lily's opinion.I think Snape was great at teaching potions and the students learned. I remember someone mentioning that he had a lot of stuff written on the board, which was probably correcting what was wrong in the books. Yes, he could be an a-hole, but some of those students were in life and death situations. I think Neville would have given me a nervous breakdown. And why did he bring his frog to class. Snape also grew up in the 1960's and 1970's, so that is where he probably learned his teaching style. At that time there was still corporal punishment and things were different. The only time I remember Snape using violence is when Harry looked into his memories.

Quote from IFFIN on June 25, 2026, 12:44 pmQuote from Krystal on February 28, 2023, 5:07 am@heatherlly, I agree that Snape's parents might not have been dead, they are usually dead in the fics for the plot convenience.
This actually reminds me that there are many fanon facts which are being taken as canon despite the lack of the evidence and I put my own piece of mind regarding them.
- Prefect Lily : Most common fanon despite there not having any canon evidence that describes her as a prefect. In Harry's POV in SWM, he described Lupin having the perfect batch yet didn't comment upon Lily having a batch. No text in canon described her as such. Her not being a prefect does explain some of her actions in SWM because she could've done more under the backing of actual power.
- Drunkard Tobias Snape : Quite surprising fact, there has not been any canon evidence in HP books and wizarding world website regarding him being a drunk. He is only described as not liking anything much and being physically abusive towards Severus with a belt. The above mentioned fanon is taken as default in almost all fics that it was mind boggling for me to find no evidence for him being an alcoholic.
There are many such fanons taken as canon so it would be better to make a seperate thread for discussing those facts.
Great points. I think I assumed that Lily was prefect because she was head girl. I really don't know much about that kind school system.
He is only described as not liking anything much and being physically abusive towards Severus with a belt.
What I remember is a child Snape telling Lily about his father, so it is a child's view. Tobias might have worked in the mill and been too tired to give Serverus much attention. As for the belt I don't remember that, but I can excuse it since it was in the 1960's and 1970's where using a belt for discipline was common. I remember trading belt stories in school.

As for my teeth, I drink a lot of tea and coffee. Unfortunately, we do not have whitening strips in the Wizarding world.
Oh please. I bet you smoked a lot in your youth and still have a smoke every now and then which helps keep your teeth yellow. I've seen pictures of you smoking. Here is one from Pojypojy at DA.

As for your hair don't wash it so much. Let the natural oils do their work. And remember black hair looks oily because of how light reflects on it.

You should know because you don't use "dark magic" and say the word mudblood, so that makes you "good people".

No, it isn't directly stated in canon, though I think this is one of those cases where it's both fair (and probably accurate) to read between the lines. England at that time (60s-70s) was suffering a severe economic downturn, which hit the working class the hardest. Then just like now, substance abuse was rampant among those who were impoverished… men who abuse substances (especially alcohol) are also statistically more likely to abuse wives and children.
In other words, there's more evidence for Tobias being an alcoholic than against it. We also can't assume that JKR would've mentioned it in canon even if it was true. Addiction is a touchy subject, especially when writing children's books.
Great points and history lesson about England at that time. I do wonder if you are from England.

2. Snape only obssesed with lily and incel.
No,he deeply loved her. I mean, truly loved her. He is never hang a lily photo in his room,he never keep lily clothes.he is truly loved her purely. But his hatred of james potter is as big too. Thats why he become conflicted and lashes out at harry. It was wrong thought. Hope he can handle it better
