I think they should have gone with someone younger given how long the show is going to be. Other than that, I have no issue with the casting. He's a good actor, not to mention an American. Maybe a sign that they're not going to be so rigid about the "UK only" restriction?
Interesting! I do hope he will kind of be able to pull of a British accent (or not sound too American, if you catch my drift). I think it would break the immersion a bit, otherwise. Some actors can do this changing accent thing really well (don't forget, they're actors), an example being Andrew Lincoln. He is British, but was cast in The Walking Dead, where he played an American sheriff (in Georgia). He did it so well that I didn't even realise that he was actually British when I watched his performance on the show. I only did when I watched some behind-the-scenes stuff and heard his standard very British accent and was like "wtf" lmaooooo.
Does anyone here know if the Snape casting has 100% been confirmed? Or is it still in the rumour category? If it is 100% confirmed, I'd have to say I'm not that pleased... (reasoning stated earlier in this thread)

There hasn't been an official announcement, but given that the rumors have persisted this long, it's most likely true. 🙁

It does seem more likely each day, doesn't it? A small consolation is that we over here are not the only ones who feel this way. I see people voicing their displeasure with HBO for this casting choice almost every time I open social media right now. :/

Yep. What's been pissing me off is the media, specifically outlets that are actively trying to gaslight people. They frame it like most fans are thrilled with this casting, and it's just a few right wing, mouth breathing racists that have an issue with it. It's like, "You can't possibly have a problem with this unless you hate black people. Shame on you!"
I (and I suspect most of us) don't want a black Snape for the same reason I don't want a Mexican Snape, or a Chinese Snape, an obviously well fed Snape in his 50s (sorry Rickman), or some tanned, muscular blond guy. Hell, I don't want a female Snape either, and lord knows, I am and always will be a hardcore feminist.
I don't want any of these things because it isn't Snape. If you change his race, nationality, gender, age, or even his weight, it's not the same character. His description in the books isn't just there for the sake of it. Everything about it reflects his personality and background.
I know I've already gone over this, so I won't rant about it any further. It just really bothers me that fans are being criticized for disliking this choice, especially since the people who are writing these articles obviously don't know what the fuck they're talking about.

Yeah, and its also wrong of series producers to try to sell series as "Book-Canon Compliant" when they are disregarding Snape, the character whose apperance, gait, mannerisms and emotional outbursts are perhaps the most detailed, described and highlighted out of all the characters in the books. So yeah, if they are gonna ignore one of the most fundamental aspects of Snape from the books, then my expectations of series are not that great.
The only amusing situation is finding out marauder fans not liking the casting of Snape because it'd show their beloved darlings as racist.

Lol, yes, that will be my silver lining if this casting turns out to be true. You better believe we'll have an entire thread analyzing the Marauders' racism and how much they suck.
As for Snape...
Even if we hate the casting, we might still be able to find ways to have fun with it. We can give him a different name, come up with creative headcanons as to why the real Snape isn't there, even do some challenges or write fanfiction based on the real Snape / fake Snape dichotomy. It doesn't have to be a total loss, especially if we keep a sense of humor about it.
He can probably be AI-d into a younger Alan Rickman fairly easily (I'm hoping someone will do this once the series comes out and I can just watch that version instead)! 😀
I'm actually kind of glad they cast Paapa Essiedu as Snape... because I was so unbelievably outraged that I went straight to the SeverusSnape subreddit to rant about it. So I think I've finally found the inspiration to come back to the fandom (hi, guyss! *waves enthusiastically*).
I've talked about this often enough with friends and strangers on the internet that some of my initial vitriol has diminished, but I feel like I can add a bit to this discussion.
Snape is THE WORST character they could've chosen to be played by a black actor. I am saying this as someone who generally has no issue with race-swapping fictional characters. Except Snape's appearance is crucial to his character and the story. I'd even argue it's more important than Harry's appearance because Harry's eyes need only be the same as Lily's, and that would do the trick.
Snape is pale, and skinny, and has oily unkempt hair ("an obviously well fed Snape in his 50s" cracked me up). His obvious disregard for his appearance speaks volumes about his state of mind. And I get that we can have a malnourished black guy, but then that'd be straight up promoting racist stereotypes. Combined with the constant jokes about his big nose, his childhood situation, the bullying for simply existing, and the fact he basically joins a terrorist group... what kind of representation is that?
And while I appreciate that this would showcase the Marauders' bullying and shut some people up on the subject, I think it fundamentally changes what that bullying represents. Racism would provide some reason (however flawed it may be) behind the Marauders' treatment of Snape. It would make them look stupid and prejudiced instead of plainly malicious.
