I don't think that's the reason 😅 but I think it started with a supposed tweet from Rowling claiming that Snape is of Eastern European descent and then everyone started their own headcanon. There is a popular meta on reddit explaining how Krum is an athletic Snape and that Snape is Bulgarian. My headcanon is that Eileen's family immigrated from Romania, that's why they're not part of the Sacred 28. And there's a fic that features a Polish Snape, I have only skimmed the first chapter though

True. People in Poland don't smile because they have nothing to be happy about. The older generation probably still carries the trauma of World War II, and the traumas are inherited further. This would suit Severus perfectly.
