The Dark Side of Every House

Page 1 of 2Next

I thought I'd do an overview of the traits of all the Houses and see how many of them have a darker or unhealthy equivalent:

  • Gryffindor

    • Nerve: Arrogance @naaga
    • Chivalry: Self-Righteousness
    • Courage: Recklessness
    • Bravery: Recklessness
    • Determination: Obsession
  • Hufflepuff
    • Loyalty: Fanaticism @naaga
    • Just: Legalistic, Self-Righteous @naaga
    • Hard-working: Workaholic
    • Patience: Complacency
    • Fairness: Positive Discrimination @naaga
    • Modesty: N/A
  • Ravenclaw
    • Wit: N/A
    • Learning: Rote Learning @naaga
    • Wisdom: N/A
    • Acceptance: Over-Tolerance
    • Intelligence: N/A
    • Creativity: Plagiarism @naaga
  • Slytherin
    • Cunning: Manipulative Behavior
    • Ambition: Obsession
    • Resourcefulness: Possessiveness @naaga
    • Determination: Obsession
    • Pride: Pridefulness

Gryffindor: Determination is a Slytherin trait, not Gryffindor one. Nerve's extremity should be Arrogance, not disrespect.

Hufflepuff: Loyalty's extremity should be Fanaticism, zealoutry is more about religious Fanaticism.

Ravenclaw: Nothing to add.

Slytherin: I don't think of Pride as a Slytherin trait, didn't see it mentioned anywhere. Perhaps we can consider Possessiveness as extremity for Resourcefulness.

I'm going by the traits listed on the wiki. Determination is listed for both Gryffindor and Slytherin. As for pride, that's also listed for Slytherin.

Wiki huh, I don't like overlap of Determination for both of them, though it makes sense.

Pride seems more Gryffindor but fair enough.

I think Gryffindor's chivalry is the parallel of Slytherin's pride, with Gryffindor focusing on principles and Slytherin focusing on dignity. I've met people whose principles go into the realm of self-righteousness, which itself is a form of pride; instead of appealing to their own dignity, they appeal to higher virtues to make themselves above others.

Makes sense, I like this explanation.

A Ravenclaw flaw I believe could be Rote learning i.e cramming the books and regurgitate the contents in exams without understanding the theories and concepts. I believe it can be an extremity of learning.

And Plagiarism can be extremity of creativity for Ravenclaws.

I feel like Plagiarism and Creativity are polar opposites

Yeah, it can be possible. My interpretation is based in competitiveness of Ravenclaws where they steal achievements and works of others for their creativity. Classic example is Lockhart who had brilliant creative achievements only to be revealed to be a fraud later.
