Thank you very much!

It's 3a.m. here, and I'm celebrating by working on one of my Snape WIPs while listening to Tōru Takemitsu and drinking good wine. (I'm on afternoon shift this week.)

Also, it's a round one, so I have high expectations for the next decade.

*tiptoes in* Hope you had a good day way back on the 3rd! What's Toru Takemitsu?

Tōru Takemitsu was a classical composer, who wrote music for both the Japanese and the Western styles of music.

Which is no mean feat, for classical Japanese music, or gagaku, is over a thousand years old, and requires a mastery of a completely different set of music theory than the western/European style.

Listening to 'In the Autumn Garden' (秋庭歌一具) right after 'Towards the Sea' (海へ) is quite the whiplash, because one is so very traditional, while the other feels very, very impressionistic.

Fascinating, thanks! I love classical music, and I'm also a huge fan of Japan. I've got a history of Japan on my bookshelf, so I will see if its discusses music. 🙂

It might be mentioned in the chapter about Heian era, because that's when Japanese culture really started to blossom.

Heian era is the age of Onmyōdō and Abe no Seimei, sarugaku, which later evolved into the Noh theatre, and the overtly (and fascinatingly) complicated kimono styling and layering.

Also, the sound of gagaku is pretty haunting, with the hichiriki flute and the biwa and the tsuzumi.
