Welcome to DASA: Defense Against Snaters Arts
Quote from DON on September 2, 2023, 2:12 pmLol just wanted to make a class for upcoming Snovers, to have somewhere where they can get their cannon/fact arguments against snaters. So anyone who can't argue don't worry this is for you!!
How this class is going to go. I'm going to post a Snater video and you guys or myself will post debunking comments arguing the video. Don't worry any arguments you like you can you use against any snaters you come across in the wild. At anytime you like.
Rules
All arguments must be cannon reliant.
Be respectful to fellow snovers, who have different opinions.
Prove Snaters wrong but please remain respectful.
Remember cannon is our friend for debating snaters.
And most importantly have fun.

DEBUNK!!!
Lesson One
DEBUNK!!!
Quote from Heatherlly on September 3, 2023, 4:00 amPersonally, I have strong objections to the term "Snater". While I'm aware that there are certain people who are disproportionately (and sometimes cruelly) aggressive toward Snape fans, I've also seen "Snater" used as an umbrella term for anyone who dislikes him. This seems unfair, reductive, and frankly rather childish. People can have a different opinion without sticking them with some silly label or treating it like a personal insult when they disagree with us.
Of course, there's nothing wrong with debunking what we see as misconceptions. We have some excellent meta devoted to that purpose. But there's a huge difference between expressing ideas and attacking people, framing it as "Snaters versus Snovers" like we're fighting some sort of war. We're not, and I think we miss a very important point when we treat it that way. There's no such thing as right or wrong when it comes to fiction, only different interpretations. That's true even if you rely purely on canon… it's not "proof" of anything for those who choose to see it differently.
What I'm saying is, some people are going to dislike Snape no matter what you say. I know that can be annoying, especially when it seems like they're being unfair, but you know what? They're entitled to their opinion, just like we're entitled to ours. We all have a right to like/dislike whatever characters we want, regardless of our reasons.
With that in mind, please don't "cuss at Snaters" either here or elsewhere on the site. We can express our opinions without vilifying those who disagree with us… that's the best possible way to differentiate ourselves from the divisive/toxic/bullying behavior that happens on other sites.

Quote from DON on September 3, 2023, 10:01 pm@heatherlly I didn't mean "cuss at snaters" I meant that it was okay to cuss in the thread? if that is not okay of cussing on this website I'm sorry.
I never meant for it to be taken like I was saying go out and bully snaters that wasn't my intention. I'll delete this thread at a later time.
And I wasn't implying the one in the video was a snater I was using this video as easy mode for fellow snovers who are bad at debating snaters for easy practice. cause yes they have the meta which are amazing "Thanx Naaga and others!!" but some of them are really long and sometimes youtube or some other places don't always show long paragraphs.
Also is it bad now to call them snaters? because I just thought it was a thing cause I've seen everyone else on the site use that term to call them which made me make up the name snover because snape-lover seemed too long?
Also I apologize if I offended anyone I don't condone bullying when debating anyone I just thought anyone would get what I meant when I was saying "cuss at snaters".

Quote from Heatherlly on September 4, 2023, 3:20 amProfanity is fine. It's always been allowed on this site, and you'll certainly catch me dropping an f-bomb every now and again. 🙂
"Cussing at Snaters" is different because it implies (and could easily lead to) bashing behavior. That might not have been your intention, but framing discussions as "fighting Snaters" leads to this "us versus them" mindset that often becomes toxic. It makes it about the people rather than their ideas, which is a huge problem on other websites.
This obviously happens on both sides (e.g. calling someone a Nazi for liking Snape or suggesting that a Marauders fan condones sexual assault). This is disgusting behavior no matter who does it... I just want to make sure that discussions here on this site don't escalate to that point.
Also is it bad now to call them snaters? because I just thought it was a thing cause I've seen everyone else on the site use that term to call them
You're right. Other members use it, though I typically don't say anything because they only do it in passing. I try to ignore it ("live and let live" and all that), but I personally don't like it. Calling someone a "hater" translates to them being hateful, which feels more like an attack on their character than a comment on their preferences. As mentioned, I do understand that some are genuinely hateful/bullying, but this term is often applied to anyone who dislikes Snape, not just the ones who are assholes about it. It suggests (however unintentionally) that disliking Snape = bad person.
Having said that, you didn't do anything wrong. Other members use that term, as you said, and I don't think you created this thread with any malicious intent. I also don't want you to delete it, because I think the discussion we're having now is valuable/productive.
With that in mind, I'd encourage others to chime in. I'd love to hear what you guys think regarding this issue. 🙂

Quote from FIQ on September 4, 2023, 8:15 amNever liked the more vocal opposition personally. I prefer to leave people with different interests to their own. In general I prefer civil discussions. I lurk the hpfanfiction subreddit a bunch. There's plenty of people there who dislike Snape, or is even vocal about it, but there's also a fair amount of people who don't, or don't care either way. I notice this in how my own Snape-related posts are voted on -- one day, I'm downvoted for daring to display interest in Snape fics, the other day someone finds a very similar post helpful.
For what's worth, my most upvoted post in the sub -- or in other words, the post that most people seemed to appreciate -- was a draft for a Snape-centric oneshot.
