For Harry, the Dursleys didn't physically abuse him, as seen in many fics, but they were emotionally abusive and neglected Harry's care, even though they had money to buy Dudley many gifts and spoil him rotten.

Harry not opening Sirius' gift in OotP when the two-way mirror could have saved his life, or at least communicate so Harry didn't stupidly run off into danger to save him (as much as I dislike Sirius).

Yeah, that was the height of stupidity, he didn't even open the gift.

For his inhuman appearance, I feel it relates to his gradual corruption after each Horcrux making his appearance Snake like is him becoming a true heir of Slytherin (in his opinion).
He looked like Snake even before resurrection, even in first war. Harry after Voldemort's resurrection thinks of his face same as his nightmares, so Voldemort looked the same before his first death in Godric's Hollow.
Voldemort's apperance change can be consious decision, he loathed his father and looked like his father, him changing to Snake like appearance is him shedding the trace of his loathed muggle father, both in name and apperance.
