Quote from Tecolotlz on December 9, 2024, 1:46 amI have confidence they will cast someone who matches the description better. Also I worry that Snape's character would be extremely racist if depicted by an actor of african descent. From how Severus is taunted for physical features, considered hideous for his big nose and other factors relating to his home life.

Quote from Heatherlly on December 10, 2024, 12:37 amYeah, I'm hoping it's just rumors/shoddy reporting. It's also possible that they leaked it themselves to stir up controversy/draw more attention to the show, but are planning to cast a different actor.
Either way, there are two things that have really bothered me about the online conversation:
1.) People obsessing over Alan Rickman.
I've seen so many comments saying that Rickman was the perfect Snape. These people claim that no one will ever fill his shoes and/or insist that someone like Adam Driver would be too young to play the part. In other words, they hold the movies up as the standard and have either not read or don't care about the books.
I'm not throwing any shade at Alan Rickman. He was a wonderful actor who gave a superb performance. Having said that, Movie Snape and Book Snape are two different characters. I want an actor who can do justice to the source material, something that even the great Alan Rickman could not do.
I'm not saying that was his fault. It's not his fault that he was significantly older than the book character, that he didn't fit the physical description (body type in particular). It's also not his fault that they cut out crucial parts of his storyline, or that he had to play a much more reserved, watered down version of Snape.
All of that was fine for the movies, but what we're being promised is a faithful adaptation of the books. I'm not sure if the people harping on about Alan Rickman understand the difference, but damn...
I want a Snape actor who is or can at least appear to be in his early 30s. I want him to be skinny and pale with a big hooked nose and long black hair. Not fluffy, well kempt looking hair like Alan Rickman had, but greasy or at least stringy in appearance.
I want that appearance to be combined with the personality that is described in the books, because they complement each other so well. I want that emotionally volatile, tortured Snape, one who is so miserable that he couldn't give a shit about what he looks like.
I'm sorry, but that's just not a vibe you get from Alan Rickman. He was way too chill, which is straight up out of character for a true book adaptation.
2.) Censorship and/or accusations of racism and bigotry.
I've seen so many discussions get shut down over the past few days, and frankly, I'm sick of it. I'm especially sick of people being accused of racism or bigotry by folks who apparently don't understand what those words mean.
I have no control over what happens on other websites, but I do own this one. With that in mind, I just want to remind you guys that you can talk freely here, and that I'll never let others gang up on you or delete posts unless they're truly egregious. I know we don't have the reach of say, X or Reddit, but you're safe here.
Other than that, I just want to reiterate that there's nothing racist about wanting a character to be portrayed accurately, especially one we know and love to this degree. I mean, would you be okay with one of the Hemsworth brothers playing the role? I know I wouldn't.

I loved Alan Rickman but Book Snape stole my heart, that volatile high strung mess of a man that deep down had so much remorse and love, it's so much more fascinating. Rickman did his best with what he was given and the fact that he was full on twenty years older than Snape in the books, it would not have the same punch if a late forties man acted the same way. Snape being young explains why he's so explosive I think.
We need someone who is young and looks the part to deliver the most Snapey Snape we can get.

Quote from ZombiePotter04 on January 9, 2025, 7:07 pmWell, hello everyone! I thought it was time for me to once again enter into a discussion on here (as I have been absent for way too long)! So, anyway, here goes 🙂 :
Personally, I don't have a lot to say on the rumors of Snape's possible casting anymore, as I do agree with a lot of what has already been said here. I do not find it a good decision to perform a "race-swap" (and a very drastic one at that) on a character whose look is VERY important/defined and is heavily criticized/mocked for in the books by other characters. Not to belittle other characters in the story, but personally I think that ANY other character in the story would be a better fit for such a different casting (that is not to say that I would prefer that, as I think most characters in a story look the way they do for a reason, which is especially apparent in Harry Potter (Harry's eye colour, Harry's glasses, Lupin's (facial) scars, Fenrir Greyback's more inhuman look to contradict Remus' more human one (despite them both being werewolves) and I could go on).
Also, I am all for diversity and equality, but I think we should go about that by creating new stories that include it. Not alter already existing stories to fit into an agenda. However, I have to admit that it can be done, as I saw in The Last of Us on HBO, where a "big" side character was cast as a black woman, although she was white in the source material. In this case the swap didn't interrupt/change the story at all, as the woman's appearance had no impact on it. She wasn't a back drop character, and it was actually quite a nice change.
But, this is a difficult and controversial topic.
(I hope I didn't offend anyone on here with my observations. Please tell me if I did.)
Anyway, I want to know who you all would like to see to play Snape if it was up to you! I'll go first:
Adam Driver.
I know this is a very popular choice and not an entirely book-accurate one, but for some reason I just cannot get it out of my mind. Maybe it's the combination of the hair, nose and eyes that do in some way remind me of Snape. Or maybe it was seeing him in Snape-like clothing in the newer Star Wars films (but we don't talk about those :p ).
Anyway, this is my personal pick! Now I wanna see yours! 😀
Also, it's good to be back! Let me know if there is anything I need to catch up on! 🙂

Quote from Heatherlly on January 10, 2025, 6:35 amHey, @zombiepotter04, great to see you! 🙂
I agree with everything you said, obviously, though I do want to respond to a couple things:
Also, I am all for diversity and equality, but I think we should go about that by creating new stories that include it. Not alter already existing stories to fit into an agenda.
YES.
For me, the problem isn't diversity. It's how and why stories are made more diverse. I am emphatically opposed to "swapping" simply for the sake of it, especially with characters where it flat out doesn't make sense. As someone who's absolutely obsessed with history, my biggest pet peeve is when they do it with historical figures (e.g. Black Queen Charlotte, Nonbinary Joan of Arc, Female Richard III). There's no logical reason for it, but worse, it erases legitimate parts of these people's identities that in some cases, had a profound impact on the lives they led.
This sort of erasure goes both ways, because in the end, neither side is represented. In the case of Queen Charlotte and similar race swaps, the underlying history is and always will be white/European.
That's not diversity. Not in any meaningful sense. It's purely aesthetic, which is an insult to people who have their own rich histories and cultures that deserve to be represented.
Fictional characters are not historical figures, of course, but context still matters. If a character already has a strongly established identity in terms of race, appearance, and/or background, it does both them and the actor a disservice to change (or outright ignore) those things.
Anyway, I want to know who you all would like to see to play Snape if it was up to you! I'll go first:
Adam Driver.
I love Adam Driver, and I know he's a popular choice, but I don't see it happening. He's American, for one thing, and I doubt he'd be willing to commit to a 10 year series.
What I'd like to see? Someone that none of us have ever heard of. I want someone who isn't famous, who seems to come from out of nowhere, a true underdog who is eager, perhaps even desperate, to prove himself. I want HBO/Max to give him a chance, and I want him to knock it out of the fucking park.
Final season aside, this is why I loved Game of Thrones so much. That show was so well cast, and (in my opinion) it was because most of the actors were unknown. Rather than chasing household names, they cast people purely based on talent, which paid off in spades.
Those who defend the rumored Paapa Essiedu casting say stuff like "they need to go in a completely different direction" because "no one can fill Alan Rickman's shoes". I actually agree with this, albeit in a different way.
Alan Rickman was much older, and he couldn't have been more well-established as an actor. He certainly didn't need that role, and we all know that his version of Snape was much calmer/more reserved than Book Snape.
Casting a younger, unknown actor is the opposite of that. Someone who isn't famous yet would be hungry for the role, and he'd have a hell of a lot more to prove. That's the energy we need for Snape, assuming we want a version that is true to the books. Someone raw, someone intense, someone who will seize on the role and give it everything he's got, knowing it might very well be his only chance to make a name for himself.
If they cast someone like that, it could be magical. That's doubly true if he actually looks like Book Snape, something we've never truly seen on screen.

ScreenRant pisses me off more often than not, but this is a good take. I've always felt that James was given way too much emphasis, given that Lily was far more important to the story. I understand that JKR might have been careful not to give away too much due to Lily's connection to Snape, but that's kind of the point. She should've been more well developed as an individual, not just through her relationships with male characters.
Also, I love the idea that she might have directly contributed to the HBP's textbook. It also makes perfect sense given that Harry's performance in Slughorn's class reminded him of Lily.
