Rereading/Rewatching the Harry Potter Series

PreviousPage 9 of 14Next

If you mean the deleted scenes, the cave scene has a bit before it where Snape confronts Dumbledore about not wanting to "do this anymore", in reference to their entire work relationship; funnily enough, I think it actually made it into the Prince's Tale adaptation. Dumbledore also mentions how young Tom lured classmates into the cave.

There's also a bit where Harry notices Draco vanishing off the map, and then comes to the conclusion later on that the Room of Requirement is unplotted.

As for one major complaint I have with the movie, going back to Snape... they leave out the prophecy scene. The one scene that kickstarts the entire seven-book series.

Yeah, I just went and watched all the deleted Snape scenes I could find on YouTube. I'd already seen a couple of them, and the others were great, but they're not so significant that I'd watch all the extended versions (at least, not right away).

Good call on the prophecy. I didn't even think about that, but you're right. That was way too important to leave out.

I wish they'd made HBP into two movies like they did with DH. There was certainly enough content for it, and hell, they would've made more money.

I've seen rumors of a reboot, which I'm not necessarily opposed to. If/when they do that, I just wish they'd go with a series rather than movies. That would be such a better format, one that would allow for an adaptation that was closer to the books. Of course, I'd also love to see a version of Snape that was closer to his book characterization. As much as I love Alan Rickman, I really do see them as two different characters.

Rewatching the movies has become sort of family tradition among my siblings and cousins in the holidays. Last Christmas,we watched the extended versions and we were pleasantly surprised by some deleted scenes. I found HBP and DH movies much better in the unofficial extended version due to color correction (I hated darker undertones in the OG) and many quality of life improvements.

Books I have not reread since about 5 years. I mainly consume fanfics and revisit some canon chapters for canon clarity and countering Snaters.

I think it would be good to remake the HP as long as they remain true to the book canon and they make it into the series format. They should also cast age appropriate actors this time.

Yes, please, especially for Severus and Lily!

I'm not ready to go back through all the movies I just watched, but I think I will do the extended version for DH. Probably won't have time to get to it tonight, though I'll definitely do it sometime this week.

Also… is the Cursed Child worth reading? I never bothered with it (or much of anything outside the original series), and I know that most people don't like it. It also has Snape in it though, so I don't know…

The Cursed Child involves big amounts of time travel and... honestly, I don't know if I should spoil it, mainly because reading the synopsis makes me feel unpleasant.

By all means, go ahead and spoil it. I've never been one to avoid spoilers. Hell, I'd already googled Severus's entire storyline before I finished the Sorcerer's Stone (first read). That was the only reason I bothered with the rest of the series. 😂

You can use a spoiler tag (rightmost button on the editor) if you don't want to spoil it for anyone else.

Right. Here we go.

Spoiler
Albus becomes best friends Scorpius Malfoy, and the two of them end up getting Sorted into Slytherin and being bullied. Harry and Albus get into a heated argument one summer between school years, and Harry angrily says he wishes Albus wasn't his son. Eventually, a time turner falls into Harry's possession, he feels his scar burn again, and an old Amos Diggory asks Harry to save Cedric. Albus overhears it and brings Scorpius back in time to do just that.

Spoiler
They try to sabotage Cedric, but their hijinks causes Hermione to distrust Victor Krum and go to the ball with Ron instead, which somehow causes Ron and Hermione not to end up together; Ron gets with Padma, and Hermione gets downgraded from Minister of Magic to the Snape of the next generation. Albus ends up in Gryffindor. Harry goes psycho and distrusts Scorpius and asks for McGonagall to spy on Scorpius using the Marauder's Map (I don't think she does). Albus and Scorpius get into a fight, make up, and try to sabotage the second challenge instead.

Spoiler
They sabotage Cedric during the second challenge, which somehow, and brace for this... causes Cedric to become a Death Eater and kill Neville, which prevents Nagini from being killed. Harry is killed, the Potter children are never born, and Voldemort rules the world. Umbridge is the Headmistress, the school is patrolled by Dementors and the Inquisitorial Squad, and Scorpius is the head of that squad. With help from an alternate Ron, Hermione, and Snape, Scorpius undoes the damage and brings Albus back into existence, restoring the original timeline.

Spoiler
I should mention that Amos had a niece named Delphi. Anyway, when Albus and Scorpius try to destroy the time turner, Delphi captures them and wants to restore the alternate timeline, because she wants Voldemort to live. She's not actually Amos's niece (she bewitched him), but is instead the secret daughter of Voldemort. Anyway, Alb and Scorp follow her back in time to the night Lily and James were murdered (because trying to kill Harry caused Voldemort's downfall) and get stuck there, but they don't because Draco has a better time turner that takes Harry back in time so he can disguise himself as Voldemort and help Delphi with her daddy issues... joking, they distract her and capture her, and then wait and allow Voldemort to go to the Potter house and murder Harry's parents.

Spoiler
Delphi is sent to Azkaban, Scorpius starts liking Quidditch, and Harry visits Cedric's grave.

I don't like how much time I spent writing that.

Holy shit, I'm sorry! I didn't expect you to summarize the whole plot. I assumed you were just going to share your personal opinions that included spoilers.

That said, thank you for doing that. I'm sure your summary is more interesting than whatever I might've found on Google.

There's a lot of wrong in what you just typed, but the thing that stands out to be the most is Harry. He sounds like a shitty father, one who hasn't grown up at all. A lot of the other stuff just doesn't make sense. Sounds like really bad fanfiction written by someone who doesn't fully understand the characters.

Yeah, not only does Harry emotionally disown a boy he ensured he would be proud of no matter his House, but just... actually, I'm unpacking this (as someone who's only read the synopsis):

  • Why would Harry say something like that to Albus Severus Potter, a Slytherin boy who's looked down on for being the disappointing son of Harry Potter, a boy who's bullied by his peers (yeah, good job Harry for cursing your son with the name Severus, rubbed the bully magnetism right onto him)? It makes Harry seem like... actually, I don't think James would behave this way to Harry had he been Sorted into Slytherin... well, I don't know that for certain, but the point stands.
  • The idea that Ron had to be jealous of Hermione and Victor going to the ball together for him to realize his feelings for her is honestly a major point against the Romione pairing.
  • Cedric Diggory is one of the purest characters in the entire series. How would being humiliated during the second task in a tournament cause him to become a Death Eater? Snape went through worse shit and was unquestionably a worse person than Cedric, and he didn't even go that dark all things considered.
  • Delphi is Voldemort's daughter. Why? And I ask, why?
  • Harry is willing to stand back and allow Voldemort to murder his parents.

The worse you make it sound, the more intrigued I am. Fucked up, I know, but I kind of want to make a separate thread where I read/roast the shit out of it.

Also, I feel the same way about Cedric. Hell, turning Ron into a Death Eater would've made more sense. He has character flaws (jealousy included) that could've easily been exploited given the right influence/circumstance.
