Today's discussion: "What do you think teaching Gilderoy Lockhart was like for Snape"?

Hell.

I'm sure he would have been tempted to hex his hair off and ruin his appearance for a day, just for laughs. He probably envisioned this when teaching him, just to keep himself sane for another day.

I agree with @sanctuaryangel. I believe Severus upgraded his NEWT class requirement to only 'O' after having Lockhart as one of his students. 😉

I think Severus was excited at first - He was young, naive, and hopeful. Extremely ambitious with a thirst for knowledge, acceptance, and power. I think he craved feeling a part of something important and life-changing. Something he knew he had the skills and prerequisites for, and the drive which must have caught Voldemort's attention.

I personally think he didn't realise the full implications of his decision, or how deep in the rabbit hole he went until Lily's life was threatened. I feel like Severus didn't quite know the full extent of Voldemort's movement until he received the Mark, and saw some horrific things, by which case it was too late to leave, or he knew he wouldn't be able to do so alive.

We don't hear of any murder or torture by his hand (in either wars - and also confirmed by Bellatrix and Igor Karkaroff), so he mustn't have been wholeheartedly into it their movement. But also supportive of how quick he was willing to turn away from his boss, and go directly to his enemy to plea for the life of a Muggleborn friend who did not want anything else to do with him.

I think Severus was an angry young man after his graduation, with a desire to prove himself.

He was morally grey and didn't care much about anyone except himself or Lily. One feature I like to think he had was an indifference to evil; I mean, he didn't like committing it but didn't care to intervene either.

He was definitely not doing murders, tortures, or any worse crimes; he was mostly gathering intelligence or pursuing his own studies.

I believe that as his trust in Voldemort corroded, he started realising that the Death Eaters weren't what he signed up for, and following a threat to Lily's life, he broke free to beg the opposition's leader to save her life. Following this, he played a spy in Voldemort's camp and a potential double agent after his appointment as assistant potion teacher in September 1981.

I think young Severus was thirsting for power and revenge after years of bullying and bullying. He was elated to feel part of something and also yearned for power to get back, according to his mad plans, his Lily by proving to her that he was worthy of her love and attention.
I imagine him unscrupulous and performing many bloody deeds beyond his mastery as a spy.
(May I say that this dark side makes him very sexy in my eyes? 😂)
But after Lily's death something changed in him...but as I always repeat I don't think ONLY Lily had been the cause of his change.

None is an option?😂 even when he behaves cynically and caustically with his students I find him adorable (although pedagogically speaking for a teacher this is not the right attitude to adopt)

Perhaps an unpopular opinion: the Occlumency scenes. They seem so painful for Harry, and Snape just kinda thrusts the skill on him. They're necessary scenes for sure, and they definitely contribute to Snape's arsenal of badass skills, but reading through them was never a comfy time for me. Even during the movies, I cringe a little.

The scene with Neville's toad. Severus being harsh with a student is one thing, but cruelty toward animals is inexcusable. D:
