Yeah, it felt like wish fulfilment from JKR, she I believe based James on her first husband who turned out to be a massive PoS.

I've been thinking about that for so long, but I've never brought it up before. I don't know the full details other than a slap here or there, but yeah, I subscribe to that idea.

Didn't she base *Ron* on her previous husband? Which is why Romione is portrayed dubiously in canon without her seeming to realize it.

It is something of both. Ron and James do share many traits if you think about it.

I'm gonna make a list:

  • Blood Status: both pure-blood
  • Siblings: James is an only child, Ron is the sixth child
  • Relationship with Parents: James is pampered and spoiled, Ron isn't
  • Self-Image: I've done a whole thing on James being a literal narcissist, Ron has insecurities but not verging on narcissism
  • Quidditch: James is a Chaser (team player whose job is to score points), Ron is a Keeper (team player whose job is to prevent Chasers from scoring points)
  • Relationship with Others: staunchly against pureblood supremacy, prejudiced against Slytherins, devoutly loyal to certain friends while also talking down to other friends.
  • Abilities: James is said to have been the best in his year (maybe an exaggeration, but I'll be generous and say he's near the top overall), Ron has some issues but isn't an idiot.
  • Intelligence: James is intelligent and has some degree of tactics, but certain decisions he makes are to his detriment. Ron is a tactical genius and serves in this role for the Golden Trio, and his understanding of tactics can lead him to criticize his friends when he believes what they're doing isn't tactically sound.

Yeah, Ron is far better and relatable. I saw she based Ron on her oldest and best friend so obviously James is based on her ex husband.

How do you guys even get exposed to this garbage? Reddit?

Mostly reddit and sometimes Tumblr for me. Check out the r/HPfanfiction, they loathe Snape completely and post daily hate posts and headcanon interpretation of his character.

LOL, I think I'll pass.

I just don't understand why you guys subject yourselves to this stuff. Do you enjoy getting mad and/or arguing about it, or is there some other reason?

Don't get me wrong. I'm not discouraging you from doing so, and of course, you're welcome to rant about it here. It's just hard to understand from my perspective, as I find it relatively easy (and much more pleasant) to steer clear of all the hate.

Depends on the severity of the outrage. If it's uncomfortable or unpleasant, then I pass. If it's infuriating, my mind goes from 1 to 100 really fast.

I used to browse r/hpffn an year ago to get my recs and often saw those posts. Nowadays I don't subject myself to arguments unless I am in combative mood or see something that pisses me off.
