Site Updates/Technical Stuff
I have no idea why the site went down, though it seems to have been a glitch with the server. I did a hard reboot and everything seems fine now… fingers crossed!
So yesterday's site outage was followed by a database glitch. I would've caught it and fixed it immediately, but unfortunately, I was asleep.
I'm hoping that yesterday was just a bad day (e.g. temporary issue with our hosting provider). If not, I'll do everything I can to resolve and/or avoid further issues.
Okay, I've been doing a lot of troubleshooting and I *think* I've identified the problem. I'm about to install and upgrade, which will take the site off-line for up to an hour, but (fingers crossed) it should get everything running smoothly again.
Okay, the upgrade went quicker than I thought. Now let's see how things go…
ETA: I love how the bots immediately show back up. Huge Snape fans, obviously. 😂
Implemented a small fix on the stalker page. When you click on someone's username, it will now take you to their profile.
Added an invitation feature to profiles. If you click on the link under your profile, you can now send emails inviting people to join the site.
Removed the Profile link from the top forum menu (not needed) and added a link for Unread Posts.
Okay, I've added the ability to use headings in the post editor. I'm also working on an "Edit As HTML" option, though that's being buggy so it will take a bit longer.
I think that's all the site improvements I'm going to do for now. Off to catch up on your posts!
Made some tweaks to the menu:
- Moved the About link to the footer. Most people rarely need to access this page, so it doesn't need to be in the sidebar.
- Moved the Members link to the top menu of the forum. Not used frequently enough to be on the sidebar. Also, the move makes it less accessible to potential spammers.
- Added the Blog link back to the sidebar. Now that we have more posts, I wanted to make it easier to access older ones.
- Added Unread Posts to the sidebar. I know we already have a link for Recent Posts, but they serve different purposes and both are used frequently.
- Shortened "Recent Posts" and "Unread Posts" to "Recent" and "Unread" in the top forum menu. This was mainly just to add a little extra room.
Changed my mind about the blog link. Added it to the right sidebar, while the stalker page has been moved to the main menu. 🙂
